Designing Your Life
Designing the life you want simply starts with a thought. Our thoughts are the foundation in which we build our life. Our thoughts are our belief systems; it’s how we see the world. It’s our perspective, if you will.
I heard a quote years ago that really intrigued me, and now as a life coach it really resonates with me and it makes perfect sense.
The quote is by David O. McKay, he said this:
“Our thoughts are the architects of our destiny.” Just sit with that for a minute. What do you think about this quote? Does this ring true to you?
I love words, so I decided to dissect the quote. Let’s start with “thoughts.” Thoughts are sentences that run through our mind – they are both positive and negative, they are also beliefs we have about ourselves and others; it’s where perception is created. One of the definitions of “architect” is a person who designs and guides a plan or undertaking and it’s also synonymous with masterminding. The word “destiny” is defined as: a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power or agency.
This quote lines right up with my coaching philosophy: Our thoughts determine how we feel and how we feel determines our actions and our actions determine our results/destiny. This makes a lot of sense to me. Oftentimes people look at the external things that they can’t control as the culprit for the results they are getting out of life. External circumstances are often out of our control, however, our thoughts are not.
So many people feel like they are floundering because they feel subject to the circumstances of their lives. They blame the circumstances for the results they are getting out of life, instead of seeing they have the power to change things by first changing their thinking.
We get to choose our thoughts. Why allow thoughts that yield unwanted results?! It takes some work to change your thoughts – some of the thoughts you’ve been thinking have been on default for so long but when you can write them down and really look at them and see that they are lies you have been telling yourself, then you will begin to see changes in your life.
Changing your thoughts changes your feelings and your actions and this becomes your destiny.
Be the architect of your life and create what you have always wanted.
