Most people I’m talking to and observing online seem to be in a constant state of fear, panic, overwhelm and stress. How do we manage all of the changes that are happening at such a rapid pace? We need to be increasing our emotional bandwidth, meaning we need to be increasing the emotional (and mental) capacity necessary to navigate all of the things coming our way without feeling like we are going to emotionally implode, explode or withdraw because it all just seems like too much to handle.

If you read my blog posts on the regular, you know that I am a life coach and that I talk a lot about how our lives are created by the thoughts that we think. So yes, I’m going to be talking to you about how changing your thoughts will increase your emotional bandwidth.

Without question your emotional bandwidth decreases when you are in constant mindset of negativity. Our thoughts affect the way we feel and the way we feel determines our actions and our actions are what create the results that we get – so it’s this vicious cycle and we end up feeling more and more depleted. If you compound this with the endless scroll on social media platforms and the endless, repetitive and negative news cycle, you are going to find yourself in a negative emotional tailspin and that bandwidth will decrease even more and you will find your capacity to cope with all the global and your personal circumstances to overwhelming to deal with.

Some good news here, let me tell you how to get some of your power back really quick. Just know that it’s not the circumstances of your life, whether it’s global issues or personal challenges, that are making you feel overwhelmed or stressed or fearful or anxious, or a myriad of other emotions, it’s your thoughts about the situation, Sure, it’s natural to have negative thoughts about challenging things and I’m not saying you should resist feeling any of those emotions but at some point you will want to work through that and not stay stuck in those emotions, so that you can show up in a better way that will yield the results that you are looking for in your life.

Right now, so many people are feeling paralyzed by the amount of changes and the bombardment of information we are receiving. It can put you in a constant state of overwhelm.

I have some great news for you, I have some tips that can help you navigate these interesting times and things that will help you to increase your emotional bandwidth. These are things that have helped me, and I know that they can help you too:

Daily Gratitude Practice – speak out at least 3 things you are grateful for each morning and before you go to bed at night, or you can write them down. Sometimes I will write these in a running gratitude list in my Notes app.

Meditation – whether it’s 3 minutes or 20 minutes, make sure you carve out some time each day, make sure it’s scheduled so you actually do it. I love guided meditations and I use the Calm app, but there are a lot of free meditations you can find online if you just take a minute to look. Focusing on the present and breath work really help to reduce stress levels and help your emotional state.

Daily Brain Dump – write down all the things that you are feeling. It’s super cathartic.

Acts of Service – doing simple kind acts for others and yourself fills your cup.

Exercise and Nutrition – exercise gives you the best natural high and is one of the best ways to help you emotionally. Nutrition is a huge factor too, so make sure you are feeding your body foods that are highly nutritious because it does affect your mind which affects your emotions.

Self-care – this can look like a lot of things like some of the things I’ve mentioned above. Warm baths, a good stretch, alone time to recharge your batteries, reading a good book, you get the picture.

Pivot – when life throws you curveballs, and you know it will, know how to navigate it by looking at your thoughts about the circumstance instead of emotionally crumbling.
